Getting Started / Frequently Asked Questions

How do I go about starting therapy?
You can start by emailing me at david.dao@sbcglobal.net or calling me at 510-418-2079.  From there, we will set up a brief telephone consultation where we will talk about what you'd like to work on in therapy. Then we will set up our first appointment.

Do you take insurance?
I currently take AETNA, Blue Shield of California and Contra Costa County Medi-Cal (however this list is growing, so ask me during the free telephone consultation).  Also, many insurance plans offer an out-of-network benefit allowing you to be reimbursed for therapy even if your therapist isn't on the panel.  I can provide you with necessary paperwork so you can get reimbursed by your insurance company.  Contact your insurance company for details.

When do I pay for therapy?  What does it cost?
You pay for therapy at the beginning of each session. We will determine a fee at our telephone consultation and before our first session.

What do I actually talk about in therapy?
You can talk about whatever feels most important for you to talk about and you will never be forced to talk about anything you don't want to discuss. If it sometimes feels difficult to find something to focus on, we can work together to find issues to focus on.  While you will be the person doing most of the talking, this doesn't mean I'm a " blank screen."  Sessions are dynamic and I will share observations, give feedback, reflect on things you say and offer support.

What age groups do you work with?
I work with children 10 years and older. I work with adults of any age.

Can you prescribe medications?
No.  In the State of California only Medical doctors (M.D.s) can prescribe medications.  I can assist you in finding a physician or psychiatrist that is right for you.

How often do I come to sessions and how long do sessions last?
Sessions last 50 minutes.  I strongly encourage people to come to therapy at least once per week. Therapy is most effective when therapist and client have enough consistent time to properly develop the therapy relationship.  Once per week (or more often) creates an environment that is most therapeutic. Less often, and the therapy gets "watered down" and less effective.

Is there parking at your office?
There is ample on-street parking at both of my offices. Limited, free off-street parking is also available at both offices.

Can I take public transit to your office?
Yes!  In Berkeley, my office is a 5-minute walk from Downtown Berkeley BART and 3 minutes from University Ave. bus lines.  In Crockett, I am a 2-minute walk from a West County CAT bus stop.

What freeways are near your office?
In Berkeley I am 10 minutes from the I-80 Fwy and 24 Fwy. In Crockett, I am 3-minutes from the I-80 Fwy (Pomona Exit).

Of course, you may have other questions not listed here. I will be happy to answer any questions either by email or in the free telephone consultation.
